Thanks to the excellent state of preservation of its old town, Gjirokastër was declared part of the UNESCO world heritage in 2005. It is one of the oldest towns in the country, one of the most appreciated by tourists. The town, whose name literally means “silver fortress”, was built on the east slope of the great mountain Mali i Gjërë, and it is a melting pot of several cultures: Albanian, Roman, Greek, Etruscan. Also known as “stone town” or “silver town”, thanks to its stone roofs and pebble paved streets, it is a good starting point to visit the many archaeological sites and natural parks nearby. In the city center you can visit Gjirokastër castle as well, and the Arms Museum inside it.
