Elbasan is the capital city of the Elbasan County, and is known as “the navel of Albania”, thanks to its central position: you can easily reach Elbasan from Tirana, the capital, and from Durres. Elbasan was built on the ruins of the Illyrian city of Scampis; the city center is called “Kalà”, the area of the fortress, whose ancient wall defenses, built on the ruins of Roman and Byzantine fortifications, can still be admired today. Elbasan is one of the “cultural capitals” of the country and it offers many museums and historical buildings, as well as being known for its therapeutic thermal waters.
Reaching Elbasan is easy: the city is about an hour from the capital Tirana, reachable by car, a new highway, built recently, makes the route quick and easy.
